Maxime Magnon Corbieres 'Campagnes' 2016
Burgundian legend Maxime Magnon takes on the hills of the Corbieres down in France’s southerly Languedoc region with this recent project. This single-vineyard bottling is comprised of 95% Carignan (100 years old!) with minimal Grenache and Syrah added for texture and weight. Aged in used Burgundian barrels; savory, spicy, and age worthy.
Campagnes is almost entirely Carigan, with a tiny amount of Grenache, Syrah, Grenache Gris, Macabou and Terret, from vines that are more than 100 years old. The depth and intensity provided by these special vines is immediately evident even on your first sip. This a profoundly mineral, impressively concentrated wine that shows darker fruits, power and length in spades. It’s a wonderfully silky example with tension and freshness to balance its strong character and looks poised to unfold magically over the years.
